Athletic Field Subcommittee Report 12May2012
A review of the current water detention plan found limited opportunities for athletic fields. The current design does not provide large level surfaces. The notional design includes a small level field north west of the CLCCA main facilities. This field will have to be for general use.
Team members are getting minimum size estimates for elementary school age practice fields for soccer, football, and lacrosse. The minimum estimates will then be compared to the initial design to determine if sufficient space is available. The team will be contacting local sports organizations to obtain the minimum estimates.
The team is also looking at other activities that may fit better within the planned terrain such as a Frisbee golf course, a regular golf driving range, and basketball/volleyball courts. Minimum size estimates will be compared with the initial design to identify potential locations for these activities.
The short brainstorming session during the May 10th meeting probably missed other possible athletic activities. The team encourages further suggestions for consideration, keeping in mind that the primary focus of the plan is water detention/retention and amenities will have to fit into the final plans. We would also welcome others to join the Athletic Field subcommittee. Those with suggestions or an interest in helping should contact Gary Stenerson (Stenerson@AOL.com).
Have you ever seen a public basketball court in use? If you're lucky some vandals and graffiti artists will use it. Other than that, it will be just another slab of concrete in Houston.
ReplyDeleteI have seen many public basketball courts in use (not that I think this is a priority for the green plan). Northfork Park, Pinebrook Park, Bay Pointe Park all have frequent casual groups if teenagesrs playing ball after school. Personally, I think it is great to have a public place for teenagers to hang out!
DeleteIt may be surprising but some years back our sub-division, Bay Forest, set up a full size basketball court with baskets at both ends and found out it drew too many kids! The park and parking around it was full all day sat. and sun. Ultimately, the community association took down one basket. It was like cutting off oxygen, those kids were suddenly gone!
ReplyDeletea basketball court is a very bad idea with the crappy apartments surrounding the rec center ,there is nothing good to come of it,what we need is a skatepark (skateboard) ,im tired of driving to seabrook or laporte
ReplyDeleteI think a frisbee golf course would be a great use of the available acreage. The game is exploding in popularity and there are a lot of local players that would be happy to help out as well as use the land. Aside from the cost advantages, the installment of a disc golf course requires very little change to the existing landscape. A fun physical activity that leaves the space "green" and in it's most natural form. You would have my vote!
ReplyDeleteA disc(frisbee) golf course would be a fantastic addition to this area. The moderate elevation and terrain changes are a huge plus. I have also posted a more detailed entry on the subject to the amenities area on this site.

Our area is in desperate need of new softball fields. I speak from experience not only as a parent, but as a coach and an area softball director. Our Clear Lake girls are being forced to use poorly maintained facilities that are very old and not very accommodating. In fact, with the sports ever growing popularity, the current parks do not provide enough real estate for practices and/or games. Many of our competitive teams must travel far from their homes in order to use a practice field. I've been able to manipulate maps and preliminary results show that a four field complex with pitching and hitting practice areas would fit in a small portion of land on the North side of the Rec Center, beginning where the Golf Clubhouse used to be. There are two options that I believe will work GREAT! Parking is already available in these areas and it is an ideal location to provide quality facilities for our girls. Building of these fields would allow for our families to stay closer to their homes, and our future softball stars a quality facility to begin their careers :-)
ReplyDeleteIt would be great to see fields set up to help out with girls sports.
ReplyDeleteI've spoken with parents of girls who play soccer and softball in a few different states and a universal complaint is the girls are always relegated to the overgrown, flooded/marshy, or otherwise sub-par fields. I think this would be a great way to let our girls know their youth sports are just as valuable as the boys.
