There are a bunch of great ideas for the use of this land, once it is engineered for storm water retention and detention that came out of the January meeting the CLCWA hosted: A dog park, hike and bike trails, wetlands, a community garden, athletic fields, a disc golf course, just to name a few! What do you think? Add your thoughts!
I live in the Meadowgreen subdivision. I would love to see a hike and bike path along the drainage canal that cuts through my neighborhood which will connect with the new park. If the park were open today, I would have to drive my car to get there. I would rather ride my bike or walk. Hopefully this can be considered and factored into the final plan.
ReplyDeleteI am a jogger who has recently moved to Clear Lake. One thing I really miss about jogging here is being able to jog on hills. There are no hills. Could you add some jogging paths with some different elevations of hill training for us? Thank you. I'm looking forward to see the results!
ReplyDeleteI second Roger's request
ReplyDeleteThanks for your great input, Roger! The drainage ditches travel throughout the Clear Lake area and several eventually connect with the golf course property. Yes, it would be much nicer to walk or bike to the new green space and even to the library or the court house. One of the goals is to ensure the trails through the golf course connect to other trails, so we expect to somehow make those connections. Please stay tuned and keep offering your comments.
ReplyDeletemyshl, good point. I really miss hills too. I can see something like the trail in Brookforest going up the drainage ditch from Horsepen Bayou. It periodically goes up and down the side of the waterway, creating a pretty good short hill effect. Thanks for your input
ReplyDeleteI remember my first year in this area realizing just how hill-deprived we our when I saw someone trying to use a parasail at the Eldorado I-45 overpass. That's a real sign of hill deprivation!
My wife and I would love to see either 1) a hike and bike trail set or 2) an open sportsplex with new tennis courts and/or sand volleyball courts for community use. Thank you for all of the work you are putting in on this.
ReplyDeleteI've lived in Oak Brook West for 32yrs. and can count on one hand how often the tennis court has been used. I suspect the same who happen w/ a volleyball court.
DeleteI usually walk on these lands for more than hour each day; and I would like to see the land managed primarily for the benefit of wildlife, including plants. Provide opportunities, like well maintained trails and maybe benches by the ponds, for people to observe that life respectfully; but manage it primarily to nurture and enhance the land's inhabitants.
ReplyDeleteMowing fewer portions of the land will help, while planting some of the region's native plants, as well as more trees, will also be beneficial. Allowing dead trees to remain on the land will also help, providing additional habitat and nourishment. On a related note, I was disappointed when the vegetation around the ponds was reduced dramatically, as many living things were destroyed and damaged in the process.
Enact city laws to protect the life out there. I have seen nets, hidden for later use as well actively being used, near the creek and some of the ponds. I am concerned especially for the numerous turtles living out there, that they will be captured and removed from their homes.
Post signs encouraging people to observe and respect the wildlife, like the turtles, while reminding them that it is against newly enacted laws for them to disturb the land's inhabitants.
This land offers the community many opportunities to extend love towards non-human life, as well as to observe seeing that life flourish. I encourage the community to fully avail itself of this.
Bike Trails!! this is may thing. I enjoy what there is now, but have felt the need for improvements too. As bike along the broken down trails I enjoy and take in all the wondeful scenery out there, the variety of trees, the ponds, the animal life and depending on the time of year the flowers and vegetation, with that said it would be great to see some improvements to the trails themselfs and bridges or overpasses connecting all the trails. I enjoy this trail the most from all other bike trails in the area because the automobile trafic is "ZERO" making me feel safe. If possible would like to keep the outdoor feel it has now and just maybe like some have suggested benches under a nice shade to enjoy a nice afternoon outdoor.I I am very exited about improving these 178 acres of land for the enjoyment and wellbeing of our community, with this much acreage there is only room for great improvents.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this opportunity to share my thoughts.

Who will monitor the area for the safety of the citizens using the park? It would be really terrible for it to become a haven for drug users and vagrants. Can "safety phones" be placed throughout the park that only call the police or ambulances?
ReplyDeleteI would like to see a skatepark, skaters are tired of having to drive to laporte or seabrook to skate there parks, why is it that we still don't have one being a wealthier area. We have a rec center and 3 baseball fields ,tennis courts , pool indoor basektball(do not say outdoor basketball ,that is just a disaster waiting to happen with the crappy apartments surrounding the rec center) ,I know the library, the high school and even the rec center are tired of us messing up there rails ,stairs, and benches ,give us a skatepark and we can eliminate the problem and bring the community together.
ReplyDeleteHike and bike trails sound great to us but difficult to
ReplyDeletecharge if money is eventually needed to keep them clean, etc.
Soccer fields if you want to generate some income.
Disc Golf can fit nicely in the park. It can work with jogging tracks and the local disc clubs are always willing to help out with design/course planning to fit into a "master plan". Thanks for your consideration.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Chris Vandagriff. I have been a bay oaks resident since the late 1990"s and i am also a professional disc(frisbee) golfer. The proposed area would lend itsef to a fantastic disc golf course. To those who are not familiar with the sport, disc golf is played similar to traditional "ball" golf, the difference being you navigate a course by throwing disc from tee box to basket (hole). The local disc golf community consist of doctors, lawyers, students , business owners and players of all ages . It appeals to so many people because of its low impact and simple nature . It requires a small initial investment ($8-$15) for a disc and is usually free to play.
ReplyDeleteLocal disc golfers are great respecters of nature and realize the courses we do have are a privilege therefore we go out of our way to maintain them . We are also very considerate of other park activities, etc. A course on his property would potentially be the best in the area and rival the MANY in the north houston area while still remaining beginner friendly. I would gladly offer my own experience, input and labor if this were to be considered. I will also be glad to answer any questions on the subject.
Thanks for the opportunity of suggestion,
Chris Vandagriff

We would like to see hiking and bike trails that also would allow dogs and a driving range. The driving range could be a source of income for CLCWA.
ReplyDeleteI think that a disc golf course would be a great addition to the area. In my hometown, two of the local parks had disc golf courses on them. The course was molded in between the terrain of the park. There were bike/walking trails throughout the course and park as well. Considering there are only tee boxes and baskets necessary for the course to be playable, joggers/walkers/bikers could still enjoy the scenery as it would normally appear. Creating more traffic through the area could keep undesirables at bay and nature should not be bothered by players. Landscaping around the park, or even creating obstacles for players could bring in plants, trees, bushes, as other posters have mentioned. I think this all could be done at minimal cost to the landscape and users of the area.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see the area keep its natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere. Sporting venues with lights and noise would be disruptive to residents living adjacent to the space.
